Create or borrow a personal Gmail account, an Outlook.com account, and a Yahoo account, then send them the exact campaign message from the exact sending mailbox. Check the folder each one lands in. In Gmail, open the message, choose “Show original,” and confirm SPF, DKIM, and DMARC each read PASS. This costs nothing, takes ten minutes, and catches the two most common failures outright: broken authentication and immediate spam placement. Google Postmaster Tools is the only dashboard where Gmail itself reports your domain reputation, authentication results, and user-reported spam rate. Set it up for every sending domain on day one, and read it against the two numbers Google publishes in its email sender guidelines: keep the spam rate below 0.3 percent, and ideally under 0.1 percent. The honest limitation for cold senders is sample size. At 20 to 30 sends per day per mailbox, Postmaster Tools often shows no data at all, so it functions as a tripwire that lights up as volume grows rather than a pre-send test. It belongs in the sequence because it is free, takes minutes to verify, and becomes your primary monitoring surface the moment volume justifies it.
Reading the result: when to launch and when to stop
The decision rule is simpler than the reports make it look. Launch when Gmail and Outlook seeds show the primary inbox, authentication passes everywhere, and the blocklist scan is clean on the lists that matter. Those two providers host most B2B inboxes, so they are the seeds that decide.
Stop and fix when any of these appear:
- Spam placement at Gmail or Outlook. A hard stop. Launching anyway converts a test finding into real spam complaints against a live list.
- Any authentication failure. SPF, DKIM, or DMARC failing on a live message means some share of your mail will be junked or rejected regardless of content. Fix DNS first and retest, remembering changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate.

- Promotions placement at Gmail. A soft signal, not a stop. For cold email it usually points at formatting that reads as marketing: HTML styling, multiple links, images. Worth one revision and a retest, not a rebuild.
Retest after every fix, using a fresh test ID or seed run, and require two consecutive clean results before launch. A single clean run can be luck; two in a row is a pattern. The fix order when placement is bad
Bad placement has a diagnostic order, and running it backwards wastes days. Work down this list and retest after each layer:
- Authentication and DNS. Failing or misaligned SPF, DKIM, or DMARC outranks every other cause. Nothing else is worth touching until a live message passes all three.
- Blocklists. If the scan flagged a list that matters, delist before content edits; a listed domain will junk perfect copy. Follow the delisting sequence and fix the root cause first.

- Content, last. Strip the message to plain text, one link at most, no images, no tracking pixel, and retest. Content is the easiest layer to blame and the least likely culprit when the layers above are broken.
The order matters because the layers mask each other. A sender who rewrites copy while DMARC is misaligned will conclude that nothing works, when in fact nothing was ever tested.
What a clean seed test still cannot tell you
A passing placement test verifies infrastructure, not outcomes. Seed mailboxes carry no engagement history with your domain, and as both Twilio and MailReach note in the guides linked above, providers increasingly personalize placement per recipient, so real prospects can see different folders than your seeds did. A seed test also says nothing about whether your targeting is right, whether the message earns replies, or whether your list is verified and current, and those decide campaign results more than placement does once the infrastructure passes.

Does a perfect spam score guarantee inbox placement?
